2012: A Year of Drought

In 2012, drought conditions persisted throughout Illinois. This year, the U.S. Drought Monitor declared northern Illinois to be in a state of extreme drought, with drought conditions in the rest of the state ranging from severe to moderate.

Crops in Campton affected by drought

As you know, most residences in Campton Township are on well water. The past development and growth in our area has seriously taxed the water table; this combined with the drought has produced a "perfect storm" of water shortages. Even with growth slowing, wells have been running dry, with some residents reporting they have had to re-drill their wells to unprecedented depths.

We've had reports of residential re-drilling projects costing as much as $15,000. This expense, of course, is borne directly by the property owner. Though development has slowed for now, area wells may continue to run dry. Thus, practicing conservation in your home doesn't just save water - it could save you re-drilling expenses, too.

What is Our Township Doing?

Campton Township has no control over the issuance of construction permits or the surging development in our community. But we are tackling water issues in our area. In 2004, Campton Township initiated a Township-wide water resources study in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Completed in 2006, the study is the first of its kind in the nation; it is expected to be completed by the end of this year and its results released to the public.

Additionally, we have launched our Well Water Info page. Here you'll find facts, tips, and links on water consumption and conservation. In the coming months, we'll be adding information on wells and water resources. And we'd also like to hear from YOU about your well water questions and issues at

In conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, we have also launched our Well Monitoring Page, where you can check well water monitoring data throughout Campton Township.

What Can You Do?

The need for water conservation is crucial and immediate. We encourage you to explore our Well Water Information pages and links to learn how you can make water conservation a part of your daily life.
